To do any
sparring, proper head and neck protection is necessary.
A fencing mask is the best way to go with this, though
some people use hockey/lacrosse etc. helmets. You will
need, when looking at fencing masks, a 3-weapon rated
version. This is the stoutest-caged one that will hold
up best to any thrusts that could possibly be taken to
the facial area. The gorget/bib is also crucial to
provide decent neck protection.
These aren’t too cheap
either, but they can be acquired for as low as about
$40. I wouldn’t bother getting a really expensive one.
Two quick links I can
recommend are:
Also, the white
masks look kinda silly with our uniforms (which are
really snazzy), so if you want, you can do like many
ARMA members and paint the gorget/bib/sides black or
red. Regular spray paint works well for this. The
Triplette site even has the option to get a colored
mask.
