To do any sparring, proper head and neck protection is necessary. A fencing mask is the best way to go with this, though some people use hockey/lacrosse etc. helmets. You will need, when looking at fencing masks, a 3-weapon rated version. This is the stoutest-caged one that will hold up best to any thrusts that could possibly be taken to the facial area. The gorget/bib is also crucial to provide decent neck protection.

These aren’t too cheap either, but they can be acquired for as low as about $40. I wouldn’t bother getting a really expensive one.

Also, the white masks look kinda silly with our uniforms (which are really snazzy), so if you want, you can do like many ARMA members and paint the gorget/bib/sides black or red. Regular spray paint works well for this. The Triplette site even has the option to get a colored mask.
